Fantasy sports have become a global addiction and the members of “The League” represent the growing popularity of the game as knowledgeable and competitive owners and sports fans battling for money, pride, and fantasy glory. With it beginning its 21st season in 2025, “The League” has become the most exciting and competitive fantasy football league out there. What began in 2005 has become a yearly phenomenon in which its members fight for the coveted championship prize. Nine of the current 10 members have been a part of “The League” for at least 19 of its 20 seasons, five playing in all 20. The continuity from year to year is there and only growing, especially with the implementation of keeper rules over the past 14 seasons. “The League — Basketball Style" is in its 14th season of existence and the hope is that we will begin to see the same continuity and level of competition as football as we continue to add seasons to its history.

BKNets914 is looking to cement its historic season with a second championship.

(1) BKNet914 (139-69-2)

vs.

(4) DBuddaZ (118-99-3)

All-Time Series: DBuddaZ leads 19-15

- This is the third postseason meeting all-time between these two franchises. BKNets914 defeated DBuddaZ in the 2016 semifinals – which was its last postseason victory before last week’s win over the New Bedford Whalers – en route to its first title, and DBuddaZ defeated BKNets914 in the 2017 quarterfinals.

- DBuddaZ is making a league-record fifth championship game appearance, its second straight, and fourth in the last five seasons.

IMG_6477.jpg

Can DBuddaZ secure another upset to equal the league-record for championships?

- BKNets914 is now one of six active franchises to make multiple finals appearances, and a victory this week would make it one of four active franchises with multiple championships.

- BKNets914 swept the season series this season to snap a five-weekly-matchup losing streak to DBuddaZ while becoming the third active franchise to win multiple regular-season championships.

Previous meetings this season:

Week 7: BKNets914 defeated DBuddaZ 6-3

Week 16: BKNets914 defeated DBuddaZ 7-2

Major historical implications are nothing new to past postseasons in “The League,” and we’ve witnessed many finals over the years that have shaped “The League” into what it is today. The newest edition of “The League’s” final will crown its 14th champion, with one of two franchises further etching their names into “The League’s” record books. This particular matchup is a unique one as well, both in the ownership matchup and the difference in franchise philosophies. It’s another final that is sure to have ripple effects for years to come and the future of “The League.”

It’s been a special season for BKNets914, and while it’s had similar campaigns in the past this one feels different. It won its second regular-season title in the last four seasons, topping “The League’s” standings for the majority of the second half of the fantasy regular season. And it finally got over the hump, winning its first playoff game since 2016 and finally getting back to another championship. It’s a season that has BKNets914 owner Luke Gorz believing he doesn’t need to win this week to validate it.

“This finals matchup doesn’t really change how I see anything – if anything, it just reinforces what everyone already knows: BKNets914 drafted one of the best fantasy basketball teams this league has ever seen,” Gorz said through email. “This roster was built the right way, from the ground up, without even thinking about the waiver wire. It’s deep, it’s balanced, and it came together through the draft – not by treating add/drops like a full-time job. Top to bottom, it’s exactly what a championship team is supposed to look like.”

Nine of the 16 players on BKNets914’s roster entering finals week all came from its draft, including seven of its first eight Draft Day selections. It finished atop “The League’s” season-long statistical rankings, leading “The League” in a league-best four statistical categories while finishing in the top five in seven of 10 categories. It had an eight-weekly-matchup unbeaten streak in the middle of the season, and following a three-weekly-matchup losing streak it suffered through without Nikola Jokic it finished unbeaten in its last six matchups with five straight wins to end the fantasy regular season. DBuddaZ’s season was much different, and don’t think Gorz hasn’t noticed.

“Then there’s the other side of this matchup, which is… a very different approach,” Gorz said through email. “(DBuddaZ owner) David (Kiarsis) is running a chaotic operation powered by algorithms, ChatGPT, paid subscriptions, projections, alerts, spreadsheets, and probably a few things NASA hasn’t cleared for public use yet. He’s just squeezing out every possible edge through volume, access, and nonstop moves. That’s really what this week comes down to: philosophy. On one side, a historically strong roster that wins on talent and stability. On the other, an ultra-optimized, transaction-heavy strategy built to wring every last game out of the waiver ecosystem.”

Something the franchise is doing is working well. There has never been a postseason played in “The League” without DBuddaZ. The only playoffs it didn’t qualify for was the COVID-shortened season that ended with a canceled postseason. It’s won at least 100 games every season, it owns or shares practically every league record with its fifth finals appearance setting its newest record. This is its fourth finals trip in five years – something no franchise has ever done – and a third title would tie The Sorge for the most in league history.

It’s possible no one has noticed in the past, but DBuddaZ owner David Kiarsis has made no secret about his belief that how you manage your team can impact whether you win or lose. Knowing the schedule, manipulating your roster with your weekly transactions, and how you use the injured reserve spots can give you the upper hand in a matchup whether your team is better than your opponent’s or not. DBuddaZ’s playoff spot was locked up for weeks before the postseason began, so everything it did down the stretch was geared towards preparing for the playoffs. Last week was a perfect example of how effective its strategy can be: White Men Can’t Jump was the better team all season long both in the standings and the statistical rankings, it had the bye week to use moves to give itself a bigger edge, and DBuddaZ still came out on top.

“Fantasy sports that take place over the course of a week are ripe for manager intervention,” Kiarsis said. “Anyone can win any fantasy football matchup because there’s nothing you can do once your lineup is set. Your team either performs or it doesn’t. In basketball and baseball what you do throughout the week can bridge the gap when your team falters. And let’s not act like my roster wasn’t still good enough to make this playoff run and now finish it with a title. Is it good enough to beat BKNets914? I’m going to do my best from the sidelines to ensure it is.”

Anyone who has been in this league or followed it knows there’s no love lost between these two. When BKNets914 won its first title, Gorz made his entire championship celebration about how he owned Draymond Green and Kiarsis – a longtime Michigan State basketball fan who turned down a Green trade earlier in that season – didn’t. Gorz is an outspoken fantasy league member when his rosters are successful, but those seasons happen far less than his comments would suggest, and he knows how much that gets under Kiarsis’ skin. Gorz acknowledged that Kiarsis’ approach can work, but this week should be about who actually has the better team.

“And if that’s the deciding factor, then there’s not much to argue.” Gorz said. “I’m not chasing a second title for validation – it’s just what tends to happen when a team is built right from the start. Drafted well. Managed cleanly. No algorithm required.”

Championship recap

(3) Soon 2 B Champ 157.46, (1) New York Nix 144.75

  • Soon 2 B Champ got 48.46 combined points from Matthew Stafford (16.76 points), Kyren Williams (16), and Puka Nacua (15.7) on Monday night to help it rally and defeat The New York Nix to win the franchise's third championship. Williams' 22-yard run with 3:33 to go in the game gave Soon 2 B Champ the lead, and Stafford's 11-yard touchdown pass to Nacua on the following play sealed the victory. In addition to Jonathan Taylor, the Rams trio was really the key to Soon 2 B Champ's season and they showed up in the postseason. All three players scored in double-digits in each of Soon B Champ's three postseason victories, with Nacua averaging 30 points, Stafford averaging 26.2, and Williams averaging 16.4 across the postseason run. Soon 2 B Champ becomes the fourth franchise to win at least three championships, and it has cemented itself as the best postseason team in league history. Despite the defeat, The New York Nix took the next step as a franchise this season and it's best-positioned with keepers moving forward led by likely 2025 MVP Drake Maye (who scored a matchup- and season-high 42.44 points in the finals).

Third-place game recap

(2) bijansexual 200.85, (4) Luther's Burden 141.22

  • Bijansexual got double-digits from six of 10 starters, including 85.50 combined points from Derrick Henry (45.60 points) and Bijan Robinson (39.90), to help it defeat Luther's Burden and earn a second top-three finish in the last four years. It's now tied for third all-time with eight top-three finishes.

Consolation bracket recap

  • DBuddaZ got 29.10 points from Chase Brown and 27.20 points from Rhamondre Stevenson to help it defeat SampDeez and earn the top overall selection in next season's draft. This is DBuddaZ's second consolation bracket title, and it'll select first overall for just the third time in franchise history but the second time in the last four years. FORTYS took care of Mighty Morphin Bower Rangers in the Sacko Bowl behind a matchup-high 25.90 points from Chris Olave to avoid its first-ever Sacko. The Sacko is the first in franchise history for Mighty Morphin Bower Rangers leaving FORTYS and The Sorge as the only franchises yet to earn the last-place honor.

My fantasy college football team

There's fantasy football and then there's fantasy college football. Believe it or not, "The League" takes it to another level — down a level to be exact — to the college game.

Players put up crazy numbers, teams put up crazy points and it leads to a crazy all-day fantasy experience. Games start at noon and aren't done until around 2 a.m., and with "The League"

expanding to 14 teams anything can happen. After winning its first title in "The League's" second season of existence, DBuddaZ failed to make the playoffs in 2014 for the first time in team history. It rebounded with three straight semifinal appearances — including back-to-back trips to the finals in 2016 and 2017 — and two more semifinal appearances in 2023 and 2024.

Championship recap

Hurricane Warning got double-digits from seven of 10 starters, including a matchup-high 33.22 points from Diego Pavia, to help it defeat Zach Rodgers 139.98-114.18 and capture the team's first championship. Pavia finished the season with four straight games of more than 33 points, accounting for 16 total touchdowns over the four-game stretch. Hurricane Warning is just the second team in league history and first since 2017 to win both regular-season and championship titles in the same season.

My fantasy college basketball team

Fantasy college basketball is perhaps the hardest fantasy sport to predict, weighing the worth of super-hyped freshmen against experienced seniors topping the list. Similar to the NBA and MLB, teams battle over the course of a week. Certain stats are given a point value and the team that earns the most total points over the course of the week earns the win. After consecutive trips to the championship game over "The League's" first two seasons, DBuddaZ has made the playoffs just twice in the last five seasons. Both of those trips to the postseason ended with semifinal defeats.

Team history

2011-12: 9-5, lost championship

2012-13: 9-5, won championship

2013-14: 7-7, missed playoffs (seventh place)

2014-15: 8-5, lost in semifinals (fourth place)

2015-16: 6-7, missed playoffs (10th place)

2016-17: 2-11, missed playoffs (12th place)

2017-18: 8-5, lost in semifinals (fourth place)

2019-20: 4-11, missed playoffs (ninth place)

The college basketball version of "The League" has folded

"The League" has merged with another college basketball league, and while DBuddaZ was initially part of the transfer owner David Kiarsis has decided to hang 'em up. DBuddaZ's college basketball franchise is no more following a 53-56 all-time record, four playoff appearances, two championship berths, and one title.
